Bill Donohue comments on an anti-Israel resolution passed yesterday by the United Church of Christ:
The United Church of Christ has now joined the Boycott, Divest and Sanction movement, a campaign designed to morally and economically intimidate Israel. Led by left-wing activists in North America and Europe, this effort has been embraced most conspicuously by so-called progressive Protestant denominations. But it is important not to overstate this movement, as the New York Times did today.
The Times either allowed its enthusiasm for this despicable campaign to get the best of it, or it employs incompetent reporters. In its story on this issue today, it refers to the United Church of Christ as “one of the largest Protestant denominations in the United States.” Wrong.
In 1962, the United Church of Christ had over 2 million members; today it has less than a million. According to the Pew Research Center study, “America’s Changing Religious Landscape,” published May 12, 2015, the United Church of Christ comprises 0.4 percent of the total American population, and a whopping 1 percent of all Protestants. Indeed, few denominations in the nation have a worse record attracting young people.
The selective indignation of left-wing activists targeting Israel, including some Christians and Jews, should be condemned by all fair-minded Americans. Disinformation campaigns should also be condemned.
