On July 14, the New York Times announced that Bill Keller was named its new executive editor. We immediately took note of a comment he made on May 4, 2002. “I am what a friend calls a ‘collapsed Catholic’—well beyond lapsed,” Keller wrote. Which explains why he got promoted.
